6 hook tips for carp anglers

Choosing the right or wrong hook decides whether you will be successful at carp fishing or not!
The market is full of carp fishing hooks.
Thick, thin, big, small, curved shanks, straight shanks, curved tip, straight tip, coated, uncoated and and and...!
Every manufacturer brings a few new hooks onto the market every year and one better than the other.
But is that really the case and does it have to be so many?
Aren't 2 or 3 different hook shapes enough for a carp angler?
In this blog post we would like to show you our opinion on the subject of carp hooks and whether or why it can make sense to use certain hook shapes in certain situations and to do without others!
The fact is, however, that choosing the right hook for carp fishing decides on success or failure or whether you have a lot of missed bites and dropouts during the drill!
1. The right hook size with the right bait size
As banal as that may sound, these two points should fundamentally go together.
A lure that is too big in conjunction with a hook that is too small may not work well as the hook will not engage the fish's mouth cleanly and properly.
On the other hand, a hook that is too big in combination with a bait that is too small cannot work properly, since the bait does not optimally balance the weight of the hook and the hook cannot catch well as a result!

Also, the distance between the hook and the bait should not be too long or too short!
A distance between 0.5 - 1.0 cm has turned out to be ideal and most effective!
2. Which hook for which rig (lead)
Again, there are a few things to consider if you want to get the most out of your carp rigs.
There are now many different rigs for carp.
For boilies, for snowmen, for pop ups, for particles, for waters with many obstacles, for big carp, for small carp and so on and immediately...!
Each of these rigs certainly has its right to exist, whether every carp angler really needs each rig for his fishing remains to be seen.
What is important to note, however, is that not all rigs work with just any hook!

3. Which hooks for carp fishing in open water?
Carp fishing in open water means nothing other than that there are no obstacles at the point where you fish and you can play the fish normally when it bites.
This type of fishing does not necessarily require particularly stable or thick-wired hooks.

4. What hooks when carp fishing in front of obstacles?
When carp fishing in front of or on obstacles such as water lily fields, herb or mussel banks or in front of sunken trees and branches, things are a little different.
Here you should definitely use thick wiry hooks, as 90% of the time the carp will try to swim in immediately after the bite.
If you now have a hook that is too thin and you cannot exert enough pressure on it to stand up to the carp, the hook will either bend open, break or, in the worst case, damage the carp's mouth unnecessarily by the hook slashing out!
Carp anglers understand "slashing out" to mean that the hook grips the fish's mouth but slips forward if there is too much pressure in the mouth and causes a larger and, above all, unnecessary wound there, which can become inflamed and seriously damage the fish!

5. Which hook for Hook & Hold fishing?
We really only recommend this type of fishing for very experienced anglers.
Hook & Hold fishing describes targeted fishing directly in front of large obstacles such as trees and branches.
Here you should not only use an extremely strong and reliable hook.
You should also use a very stiff and fast rod and a very thick main line!
Roughly speaking , when hook & hold fishing, everything should be one size larger, harder and more stable , so that if the worst comes to the worst, you can drill the fish safely and not cause them unnecessary damage!
So , if you have just started carp fishing or are still a bit inexperienced, we would like to appeal to you not to do this type of fishing for the time being, even if it can be very tempting from time to time, because in such places you stop the carp preferred!

5. Which hook for pop-ups?
Carp fishing with pop ups is a very exciting and extremely effective form of fishing.
Here you use a floating boilie, which you offer with a special rig (leader) directly above the bottom of the water.
